SS Blog Post 10: Web Presentation & Design
The web presentation/networked resources and project design/intellectual property passages of the book build off of the values of organization and transparency we have learned through the study of DH this semester. The web presentation/design chapter discusses the benefits of understanding the platform one’s digital project will be made on, and how to get assistance with the specific technological issues different tools can have. The chapter “Web presentation formats and networked resources'' states that it is important for one to make a list of the design specifications their project requires including privacy and flexibility before picking their platform for their investments to be as effective as possible (Drucker, 199). The privacy policy of a platform is important as not all DH scholars/creators wish for their works to be public, and people have different opinions of how creative freedom is reflected in their own processes. Being in the presentation stages it is important to reflect on the past projects we have analyzed for the course such as digital memorials, archives, and virtual tours. The presentation of a memorial tends to be simple and timeless to best frame and preserve events that have occurred and/or victims’ stories. The presentation of archives and virtual tours depend on the topic/setting of the historic works. Appropriate presentation is crucial to conveying the purpose/message of one’s project.
The presentation and design chapters emphasized that I will need to evaluate what expenses such as time and finances that I am willing to put into my final web presentation, along with the installments of standard formats. Since I’m a college student I will be choosing a free, more streamlined software in creating my MEdiation site such as Wix. Wix has standard formats/templates to choose from that will ensure my website is uniform, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to navigate. Hover menus would be helpful in building navigational transparency on my MEdiation site. The intellectual property section of the coursebook suggested that fair use, copyright laws and distinctions among licensing agreements should be understood before undergoing digital field work. Though all the information I put about myself on the website will be stored by Wix, their terms of use section states that all materials will be owned by me…there is probably a catch somewhere there but I’ll just be sure to put things about me on the site that don’t relate to social security numbers and such.
