Chapter 10: Web Presentation and Design (Alexa Prewitt)

After reading chapters 11 and 12, I learned a lot about how to portray my work in a way that is appealing through media. Presentation and design are crucial when creating a website. There are three types of web presentation formats which include repository/collections, exhibits, and publications. There are a variety of different website builders that can be used depending on what type of website you are looking to create. We looked at Wix and Weebly in class and we came up with pros and cons for each. I have used Weebly in my Technical and Professional Writing class which is what I'm going to use for Digital Humanities as well. Although you have to pay for some of the features on Weebly, it's extremely easy to navigate and browse through all the different features.

I was particularly interested in the web platform section of the chapter because it's directly applicable to what we're going to be doing in class throughout the upcoming weeks. The book discusses the importance of keeping your website updated. It's important to keep the information on your site current, but it's equally as important to make sure the platform you're using is also being updated regularly. You want people to be able to access your website at their convenience without having to deal with maintenance issues. Once a website is created, there is still more work to be done. It's important that the creator does upkeep every once in a while.

Another interesting part of this chapter was learning about the different aspects of creating a website, as well as which one's take priority. First, it's important to get the fundamental information written down to create a base for the website. Then, the design aspect comes in where personal creativity is put on display. Some ways this can be done is by using a variety of text colors, fonts, and links to other resources. Most people use a platform in order to create their website so in order to create something unique, different functions should be utilized. This will help to create variation across the many websites that are out there.
