Blog Post 10: Web Presentation & Desgin
Web presentation and design reflects what we've learned throughout the semester through the different types of presentation formats and layouts. The book breaks up three types of formats for web design, these are collections/ repositories, exhibit, and publication. The collections/ repositories format includes large collections of photos, videos, images, writings, etc typically from a museum or library. This type of layout includes working metadata, as well as digitizing and digitalizing this metadata. The exhibit format is similar to the collections format. It includes digitizing artifacts and documents, and producing an accessible interface. Exhibit projects can also includes links to maps, GIS systems, and virtual 3D spaces that we have learned about in previous chapters. A publication format relies on a creatively flexible platforms that allows for the presentation of articles and publications. Media like images and videos can be included in publication formats but are not at the heart of the format unlike collections and exhibit formats. It is important that text can be imbedded within the platform used to make a publication formatted website.
I imagine that I will likely be using a publication format for my MEdiation project. It seems to have the most flexibility as this project is more like a portfolio more than anything else. I imagine my design will include a home page with a navigation bar that will link to my projects that I would like to show off. I will avoid using copywritten images or songs or media of any kind within my project as to avoid infringing upon someone's intellectual property. Many of the sites that we went through in class included design features that included copywritten-free images and symbols. I will likely use these to keep my site visually appealing.
