Blog Post 6: Maps & Virtual Spaces

Virtual tourism and heritage are useful and interesting concepts that have become very prominent in today’s society. With technology constantly advancing, virtual reality tours and digital models allow us to explore historical sites as well as cultural landmarks from our homes.

As discussed in Chapter 8 of the reading, maps and GIS are important tools for decision-making across a variety of fields, including politics and social work. We can analyze and compare data using maps as visual representations of information. The “Mapping Color in History Map”, for example, provides insights into historical events and trends through the visualization of color usage in maps. The focus in Chapter 9 shifts to three-dimensional and virtual models that provide immersive experiences that extend beyond traditional maps. People can explore virtual versions of historical sites based on these models, which recreate them in remarkable detail. However, It is difficult to ensure the accuracy of these models, especially when they are based on simulations, as discussed in the reading.

One example of virtual tourism and heritage is the One Orlando digital memorial, which commemorates the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. This website allows people to pay their respects and learn about the shooting from anywhere in the world. Similarly, the Maine MILL website provides access to historical documents and artifacts related to Maine's industrial history, this websites educates people which can help to preserve them for future generations.

Virtual tourism and heritage offer numerous benefits, including increased accessibility to cultural and historical sites, the preservation of cultural heritage, and opportunities for education and research. These concepts align closely with the upcoming curation unit in class, since curation involves the preservation and presentation of digital content for educational purposes.

In conclusion, virtual tourism and heritage offer exciting opportunities for exploration and learning in the digital age. By utilizing these concepts and resources, we can improve our understanding of the past and present while contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.

  1. Your post does a great job of emphasizing the importance of virtual tourism and all of the aspects that go along with it as the world continues to digitize. The integration of technology allows us to explore historical and cultural landmarks or sites and creates experiences far beyond traditional. Through technology, we can now visit and educate ourselves on maybe historical places that we may never see in our lifetimes. Whether that is a lack of ability to travel or any other reason, we now have a way to expand our knowledge from the comfort of our own computers which is so important in this ever-growing world. Mapping is also an important tool for learning history, and I liked how you commented on that. My digital humanities project which focused on educating the audience about the slave revolt in Jamaica, used an interactive digital map to show different historical events and trends that led to and related to the main topic. This is such an important revolution in the digital world and your blog post really emphasized the importance!
