What is DH?
What is DH?
"The digital humanities is whatever we make it to be." – George H. Williams
I don't have that good of an understanding of digital humanities, because the more definitions I see the more confusing it becomes. I don't think that its true definition is fully formed, so there are thousands of definitions to make up for it.
Humanities study aspects of human society and culture. This could mean artwork, music, literature, history, linguistics, etc. I would think that digital humanities studies these things as well, using technology. However, things aren't always that simple.
In chapter one of the DH coursebook, Johanna Drucker defines digital humanities as "the intersection of computational methods and humanities materials." There are different components of digital humanities projects: materials, processing, + presentation. Beginning to understand these components is a good way to start developing your understanding of DH as a whole.
Your definition really fits with Drucker's "the intersection of computational methods and humanities materials." There are so many definitions out there, but this is the bigger picture! Love the image!
ReplyDeleteEven after reading the chapter, I also still don't have a solid understanding about what digital humanities. I definitely see it as using technology to study the humanities. I believe the chapter mentions using print materials like maps and manuscripts and turning them into a digital format, essentially cataloging said materials into a database or other digital folder.
ReplyDeleteFrom Victoria: I definitely agree with not fully understanding was DH was at
